How do I get started with my website?

I’m here to help, and am happy to provide assistance with what you need while we start your website. Please feel free to ask me anything via email or phone.

Why WordPress?

I believe WordPress is the best platform for most modern small to medium-sized businesses. It is both beautiful and functional and has the flexibility, mobile responsiveness, and ease of editing needed for those with any level of website content editing.

Do you design websites on other platforms?
Yes, I am familiar with WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace. I also like to learn, so if you have another platform you want to work on I will learn how to use it, so I can assist you with your existing site.
Will my website work on mobile devices?

I’m a web designer who specializes in responsive design for any device.
The sites I create are optimized to work on all devices and menu navigation is always easy with my creative designs

Do I need to have my content and images ready before the project starts?

Yes and No. Gather everything you have, and I can help fill in the gaps. Be it design, images or copywriting. However it is easier if you have everything ready to go.

Do you provide training so I can maintain my own website?

Yes, I provide training to all of our clients at the end of each project. This is normally done with tailor made ‘how to videos’. Then you can follow along again and again. However if you would like to be shown in person or via Skype, this is fine too.

Do I own my website?

Yes, everything that I build and design will be 100% owned by you. Most of our clients stay with us for the life of their website. But if for any reason you decide you want to take your business to another studio, we will happily support you in making the transition as effortlessly and efficiently as possible.

Who is my host?

You might already have a host, if you already have a domain name. I recommend using Godaddy, on the ‘Ultimate’  plan of $12.95 per month  – I can help you set this up if needed.

Do you purchase the hosting plan/domain name for me?

I can do this if needed.

How long does it take to build a website?

A simple business website usually takes approximately 2-4 weeks to design and build. eCommerce websites usually take approximately 4-6 weeks to design and build to create. But it also depends on how quick you are to respond to emails, and how much content you have to gather.

Will you write my website copy?

Yes, let me know and I can help with the written content.

Will you maintain my site after launch?

Yes, I offer to maintain your site for you. I charge $60 per hour, but a simple update might only take 15 minutes. Or I can show you how to do it yourself. 

Do you provide SEO for my site?

Yes, I can help with your SEO. We can discuss how much you would like me to focus on this. As I offer different levels in the different Website plans. However, SEO is an ongoing thing, and isn’t something that you can just do and then forget about. 

Do I need a SSL certificate on my website?

You need to have a SSL certificate for your website in order to protect it and the people on it. This just means that all of the data being sent over the internet stays encrypted- which makes you safer from third parties reading any information they can get their hands on! It’s also important if you’re an ecommerce site because Google wants secure websites ranked higher than nonsecure ones, so make sure your business is protected by getting a SSL certificate now before someone else does first.

I already have hosting and a domain, is this ok?

That’s no problem at all. There are various different options so please contact us so that we can discuss the best configuration for you. 

Once the site is live, how much is it to get things changed?

We charge $60 per hour. But minor changes might only take 5-15min.

What questions will you ask me before we start?

1) What does your company do, and what is the purpose of your website?

2) What pages would you like on the website? (e.g. Home, About, Services, Contact).

3) List any websites you like. Perhaps from a color, style or layout point of view. Please note that the website does not have to be the same type of business, we are just trying to understand the style that you require.

4) What is the target audience of your company / website?

5) Please tell us if you have an existing logo and color scheme. If not, is there a colour scheme or logo idea that you would like to suggest?

6) Do you have any companies in the same field that you are competing against? If you know of any, please provide the name or website address of them.

7) If you have anything else that you feel has not been covered by this questionnaire please list your comments here.

Am I locked into a contract?

No, any ongoing contracts I offer, such as website maintenance and social media management, can all be cancelled at any time.

If you wish to cancel larger scale projects, such as web design, you’ll need to pay a cancellation fee as outlined in the terms and conditions.

What if I don't like what you create?

This has never happened to me. I show you several one page options, which will be based on specifications and your personal preferences. I will then go back and forth with you throughout the process. This keeps you in the loop, and also means you can give me feedback throughout.

Feel free to always provide feedback and your honest opinion. I want you to be completely satisfied.

Do I need to pay upfront?

We do expect a deposit, so that we can spend quality time with our clients

Is my website unique?

Yes. We create mockups of your website, then using tools such as Photoshop & Illustrator create aspects that are all individualied.

The design will be based on your business branding & requirements & be uniquely yours.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes, if you have a specific requirement, something different from the packages. Gem Black can quote it up for you. No problem!

Do you set up hosting, domain and email?

Yes, if you need these, Gem Black can give you a fixed price, or $60 per hour to set up. 

How do we share files?

There are lots of ways to do this. Gem Black is open to how you want to share files. We can share via, Apple albums, Dropbox, Google Drive, email or USB.
